Before you assume the worst, here's how to narrow down what's actually wrong — and what each fix typically involves.
1. Dead or swollen battery
The single most common cause of a laptop that won't power on. If your charger LED lights up but the laptop still won't boot, or the battery feels warm/bulged, the battery has likely failed. A swollen battery is a safety risk — stop using the laptop immediately and have it replaced.

2. Faulty charging port or adapter
If the charging light doesn't come on at all when plugged in, the issue could be the charger itself, a damaged DC jack, or a bent pin inside the charging port — common after a laptop has been dropped or the cable has been yanked at an angle repeatedly.

3. RAM seated incorrectly or faulty
A laptop that powers on (fans spin, lights come on) but shows no display can often be a RAM issue — especially after the laptop has been moved, cleaned, or dropped, which can jolt a RAM stick loose.

4. Motherboard or power IC failure
If there's genuinely zero response — no lights, no fan, no sound — even on a different known-good charger, the fault is likely deeper: a blown power IC or motherboard-level issue. This is more involved but very often recoverable without replacing the whole motherboard.

5–7: Liquid damage, dead CMOS battery, and software lockups
Liquid spills can short individual components without killing the whole board — early action (don't try to power it on repeatedly) matters a lot here. A dead CMOS battery rarely stops a laptop from booting but can cause boot delays or BIOS errors. And occasionally, a laptop appears 'dead' but is actually stuck in a software/BIOS loop, fixable with a simple reset.
