The most common cause: dust buildup
After 1-2 years of regular use, dust accumulates in the fan and heatsink fins, blocking airflow. This is the single most common and most fixable cause of overheating — a thorough internal cleaning plus thermal paste reapplication often drops temperatures by 15-20°C.
Other common causes
Dried-out or degraded thermal paste (even without dust, paste loses effectiveness after 2-3 years), a fan that's seized or spinning slower than it should, using the laptop on a soft surface (bed, lap, blanket) that blocks the intake vents, and background processes/malware pushing the CPU to constant high usage.
What you can check yourself first
Use the laptop on a hard, flat surface and check Task Manager (Ctrl+Shift+Esc) for unexpected high CPU usage from a single process. If temperatures are still high after that, it's a hardware-level cleaning/thermal paste issue — not something compressed air alone usually fixes properly, since it doesn't replace degraded thermal paste or clean fins thoroughly.
